Brand New: The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me (Review)

Brand New has reinvented themselves yet again with their third release: The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me. Along with having a totally new sound, they've managed to create deeper, somewhat spiritual lyrics. While their previous pop-punk albums have made them an underground success, this album exposes their indie rock side. It's easy to see that Brand New is a tad bit ahead of their peers. Their music flows with semi-dark lyrics that question life, love, and death. The track "Jesus Christ" is one of the more powerful tracks on the album...

"I know you're coming in the night like a thief
But I've had some time, O Lord, to hone my lying technique
I know you think that I'm someone you can trust
But I'm scared I'll get scared and I swear I'll try to nail you back up"

I have to say just reading these lyrics definitely doesn't do them justice. The album is chock fool of lyrics such as these, coupled with spine-tingling guitar rifts and echoing drums. Who really cares if these guys aren't as mainstream as they could be. Jesse Lacey's lyrical emotion will leave you wanting more. Are these the same guys that released pop track "The Quiet Things that No One Ever Knows"? I find it hard to believe.
